This Day In Hockey History-April 3, 1966- Bobby Hull Sets New NHL Scoring Record

Although the Hawks lost both weekend games, scored his 54th goal and also picked up an assist to set a record for most points in a season. Hull's two points gave him 97 for the season, one more than the 96-point mark that former Montrealer set in 1958-59.

Bobby Hull hasn't set any more goals for himself — except a winner's share of the Stanley Cup playoff purse.

The Chicago scoring ace, who previously set a National Hockey League record with 54 goals, established a scoring mark Sunday night while Boston Bruins were whipping the Black Hawks, 4-2, to finish out of the cellar for the first time in six years.

Hull was obviously proud of his 97th point in one season — an assist on a goal by Stan Mikita — but he was a bit downcast over Chicago's failure to catch Montreal Canadiens in the battle for first place.

And he was looking ahead to the coming semi-final series against Detroit Red Wings.

“I think we'll do well against Detroit.” he said. “We always play well against the Red Wings at home and we have our first two games in Chicago.

“I'd like to get another crack at Montreal,” he said, assuming the Canadiens will win their playoff series against the third-place Maple Leafs.

He said he was particularly disappointed at Chicago's failure to top Montreal because the battle was lost in head-to-head meetings.

“We had three key games against them and we couldn't win one,” he said.

Hull's assist against Boston enabled him to eclipse the 96-point record set by Dickie Moore with Montreal in the 1958-59 season.

51st goal bigger thrill

“But it wasn't the same thrill I got from my 51st goal.” he said.

Hull scored his 51st goal against Cesare Maniago of the New York Rangers to erase a 50-goal record he had shared with Montreal greats Maurice Richard and Bernie Geoffrion.

Hull got his record assist at 1:01 of the first period, setting up Mikita with a soft pass in front of the net after he stole a clearing pass to the right of Boston goalie Ed Johnston.

The Boston crowd of 13.900 gave him an ovation as he collected the puck for a souvenir.
