This Day In Hockey History-May 20, 1965-Bobby Hull Wins Hart Trophy as NHL MVP

MONTREAL (CP) – , elegant left-winger of Chicago Black Hawks, was declared the winner today of the Hart Memorial Trophy, his second individual trophy award of the 1964 65 National Hockey League season.

He was earlier accorded the Lady Byng Trophy as the NHL player best combining gentlemanly conduct and good play.

Hull beat out Normie Ullman of Detroit by seven points in the overall voting for the first and second half, the closest race for any of the trophies for the recently completed season.

It was the blonde Chicago jet's great first-half performance during which he scored 32 of his 39 regular-season goals that gave him enough votes to scrape by the Detroit center.

Hull piled up a 66 point lead over Ullman in the voting at the midway point of the season, but got only 15 in the last half Ullman led the second half poll with 74 out of a possible 90 votes, but he got only 22 votes to Hull's 88 in the first half.

Gordie Howe of Detroit, a six-time w.nncr of the Hart, placed third with 35 points, 26 in the second half when his play-sparked the Red Wings to the NHL championship.

Hull, who finished fourth in scoring during the regular season with 71 points, became the third Chicago player to win the Hart Trophy since it was first presented in 1923-24.

Chicago goalie Al Rollins won it in 1953-54 and Max Bentley was the 1945-46 winner.

Tommy Anderson of the old New York Americans was the last left winger to take the Hart award, winning it for his performance during the 1941-42 season.

Hull picks up $1,250 for winning Ihe Hart Trophy. $1,000 as overall winner, and $250 as leader in the first half. Ullman receives $500 as runner-up. plus $250 as second-half leader.

Ullman, a 10-year veteran with ihe Wings, had his best season in 1964-65, finishing second Io Chicago's Stan Nikita in the individual scoring race. He led the league in goals with 42 and also made the firs! all-star team
