This Day In Hockey History-May 8, 1950-Chuck Rayner Awarded Hart Trophy as MVP

MONTREAL (CP) — Claude (Chuck) Rayner, the goalkeeper for , is the 1949-50 winner of the as most valuable player to his team, the National Hockey League announced Monday night.

THE SUTHERLAND, Sask., native becomes the second goal-keeper ever to win the award. Roy Worters of the New York Americans was the winner in 1928-29.

Ted Kennedy, centre with Toronto Maple Leafs, was second choice behind Rayner and Maurice Richard, Montreal winger, third.

Rayner, who is 29 years old and makes his home in Kenora, Ont., received 36 of a possible total of 54 paints Kennedy had 23 and Richard 18.

Selections are made by a panel of 18 sports writers and broadcasters from the six cities in the NHL. Voting was on a point basis of 3-2-1, for first, second and third choices.

It. was a big season for goalies in pulling down top honors. The Vezina Trophy, won by Bill Dur-nan of Montreal Canadiens, is an automatic award, going to the outstanding . But on top of that Jack Gelineau of Boston Bruins captured the Calder Trophy, rookie of the year.
