This Day In Hockey History-May 11, 1974-Gordie Howe’s An All-star For Thirteenth Time, In WHA

LOS ANGELES (CP) – , 12 times a first-team all-star in the National Hockey league, has won first-team honors in his first season in the World Hockey Association with Houston Aeros.

The 45-year-old veteran of 25 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL where he also made the second all-star team nine times, edged WHA scoring champion, Mike Walton of Minnesota Fighting Saints, for the right-wing spot on the WHA's first team this season.

Left-winger and center complete the first team forward line announced today by the WHA which polled writers and sports broadcasters in each of the 12 league cities.

Hull, player-coach of Winnipeg Jets, Lacroix of New Jersey Knights and defenceman Paul Shmyr of Cleveland Crusaders are repeaters from the 1973 first team.

Defenceman Pat Stapleton of Chicago Cougars and goalie Don McLeod of Houston Aeros complete the 1974 first team.

Howe's son and team-mate, Mark Howe, won the left-wing spot on the second team, joining Walton and centre Wayne Carleton of Toronto Toros. J. C. Tremblay of Quebec Nordiques and Al Hamilton of Edmonton Oilers form the defence and Gerry Cheevers of Cleveland was voted the second-team goalie

The third team has left-winger George Morrison of Minnesota, right winger Danny Lawson of Vancouver Blazers, centre Ralph Backstrom of Chicago Cougars, defencemen Kevin Morrison of New Jersey and Brad Seiwood of New England Whalers and goalie Al Smith of New England.
