New York Rangers defenseman Brian Leetch set an NHL record for goals by a rookie defenseman (23), breaking the mark of 22 set by Barry Beck of the Colorado Rockies in 1977-78, during a 4-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
The record still stands today.
