This Day In Hockey History-May 13, 1975-Avco Cup’s goin’ back to Houston

QUEBEC ( CP> — , led by the father-son combination of Gordie and Mark Howe, Monday night defeated Quebec Nordiques 7-2 to win their second consecutive title.

The Aeros won the for the second time by beating the Nordiques in four straight games of their best-of-seven final.

While it fell to president Dennis Murphy to present the trophy to Houston team captain Ted Taylor, the elder Howe, now 47. had the honor of announcing the name of the recipient of a trophy named after him. The Howe Trophy goes to the player voted most valuable in the playoffs.

It was won by Houston's Ron Grahame, the rookie netminding sensation from the University of Denver. Voting for the award was conducted among sportswriters covering the league playoff and the trophy will be presented to the Houston goalie at a later date.

Gordie Howe helped the Aeros complete their four-game sweep by scoring his seventh anc eighth goale of the playoffs and also assisted on the second goal scored by right-winger Frank Hughes.

In addition to the two-goal efforts by Howe and Hughes, left-winger Mark Howe counted his 10th goal of the playoffs, Gordon Labossiere added his sixth and Larry Lund scored his fifth.

Left-winger Rejean Houle scored both goals for the Nordiques and finished the playoffs with 10.
Grahame turned in another spectacular perdormance for his 10th consecutive playoff win. despite facing 38 shots by the Nordiques—18 of them in the second period.

Gordie Howe opened the scoring on a power play at 2:41 of the first period.

But Houle tied the score 1-1 at 6:01 of the period when he shoved the puck beneath Grahame after a shot by Mark Tardif had bounced off the goalie's pad to lie on the goal line.

At 12:18, it was Mark Howe's turn.

Seven seconds before the first period ended. Labossiere gave the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Grahame put out perhaps his strongest effort of the senes early in the second period as he stopped a rash of Quebec shots. However, the Nordiques failed to score and at 7:36. Gordie Howe put the puck between Brodeur's legs.

Houle came back with his second power-play goal of the night seven minutes later but Hughes had increased the Aeros' edge to 5-2 by the end of the second period
Lund and Hughes scored in the third period.
