DETROIT — Darren McCarty helped Detroit settle an old score with Colorado's Claude Lemieux and also scored the winning goal 39. seconds into overtime as the Red Wings took a fight-filled victory over the Avalanche.
The Red Wings' lone victory in four meetings with the defending NHL champions was also the 300th career victory for Detroit goalie Mike Vernon, who squared off with Colorado's Patrick Roy in the biggest of several brawls during the contest.
McCarty won it when Brendan Shanahan got loose and drew Roy to the right side of the goal before passing left to McCarty, who fired into an open net for his 19th goal.
Martin Lapointe scored two goals for Detroit, and Sergei Fedorov, Nicklas Lidstrom and Shanahan had one goal each.
Valeri Kamensky had his third career hat trick for the Avalanche, with his third goal giving Colorado a 5-3 lead early in the third period, with his third goal giving Colorado a 5-3 lead early in the third period.
