The Canadiens had hoped to trade the 32-year-old Lapointe to gain the No. 2 overall selection in the entry draft of amateur players next Wednesday. Montreal already has the first choice of Colorado Rockies because of a previous deal and the Jets, who finished 20th in the overall standings last season, will select second.
“There is no deal,” said Ferguson. “The Canadiens would have to change their offer.”
Ferguson said it would take a player, perhaps of the calibre of forward Mark Napier, to change his mind.
