This Day In Hockey History-April 4, 1976-WHA Records Broken at Record Pace

Quebec Nordiques

TORONTO (CP) — While have been fighting for playoff position, season records have been failing in every direction.

A league official said Sunday night at least eight team or individual records have tumbled in recent weeks as the league completes the longest schedule in its brief history.

Quebec Nordiques, led by league scoring leader Marc Tardif, lead the record-breakers.

Tardif has 143 points and 73 assists, most ever for a left winger. Bobby Hull of the had 142 points and 65 assists last year.

The Nordiques have four 100-point scorers—Tardif, Rejean Houle, and —topping the three who reached that plateau for Winnipeg in 1972-73 and again last year. They share the major league mark with the 1970-71 Boston Bruins but Serge Bernier, with 99 points, has a chance to reach the 100-point level against and give the Nordiques exclusive possession of that record.

Quebec is the first team with three 50-goal scorers in its lineup—Tardif, Cloutier and Houle. The 1970-71 and 1973-74 Bruins along with the 1974-75 Nordiques and Jets and 1972-73 each had two 50-goal scorers.

The Bordeleau-Cloutier-Tardif line has 162 goals, topping the 156 scored by last season's Winnipeg combination of Hull, and .

The Nordiques have also set a record in truculence with 162 minutes in penalties, far exceeding the old mark of 1,477 held by the 1972-73 Los Angeles Sharks.

Paul Henderson of the Toronto Toros

Toronto Toros, last in the overall standings have by far the worst defensive record in WHA history. They have allowed 388 goals, 43 more than the 1973-74 Vancouver Blazers.

Phoenix Roadrunners have had the league's most ineffective penalty-killing record, allowing 87 goals while they were a man short to eclipse the 76 they gave up in the same situation last season.
