MONTREAL (CP) — Guy Lafleur, the explosive right-winger from Quebec Rem parts of the Quebec Junior A Hockey League, today had the honor to be the first player picked in the National Hockey League’s 1971 amateur draft

Lafleur, who scored 130 goals in 62 regular season games last year, was grabbed by the Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens The Canadiens held the first-round pick of California Golden Seals because of a prior deal.

Marcel Dionne, the small but high-flying centre from the Ontario Hockey Association’s St. Catharines Black Hawks, was the next to go. He was drafted by Detroit Red Wings.

Dionne scored 62 goals and had 81 assists in 46 games last season and was OHA scoring leader as was Lafleur in the QJAHL.

Vancouver Canucks were next on the griddle and after a time out grabbed defenceman Jocelyn Guevremont from Montreal Canadiens of the OHA.

BLUES PICK GENE CARR

St. Louis Blues, who had Pittsburgh Penguins’ first-round choice, latched onto forward Gene Carr from Flin Flon Bombers of the Western Canada Hockey League for the $3,000 NHL draft price.

The NHL clubs pay an additional $3,000 to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association when the amateurs turn professional and another $4,000 if the player picked plays 25 or more games in his first pro season in the NHL.

Richard Martin, the left winger who set a record of 71 goals in the OHA with Montreal Canadiens last season, was the next to go. He went to Buffalo Sabres where he joined former team-mate Gilbert Perreault, first-round pick last, year and NHL rookie of the year.

Boston Bruins took Los Angeles Kings’ first-round pick and drafted defenceman Ron Jones from Edmonton Oil Kings.
